For the foreseeable future, the labor market continues to cool and tighten making the priority of organizations on productivity to hit profitability. According to the RSM Middle Market Business Index (MMBI) Workforce Report, it was unanimous among respondents expecting staffing challenges over the next 12 months.

Additional MMBI data shows trends on investing in employee productivity:
  • Employee Compensation: 52% of respondents increased employee compensation in the previous quarter, and 68% said they would do so in the next six months.
  • Talent Development: Companies are strategically appealing to employees including flexible scheduling (47%) and better-defined career paths (41%).
  • Digital Transformation: Companies remain steady on planning or considering investment in automation or IT in the upcoming year (57%).

Chris Mueller has forged a 30-year career in human resources, successfully guiding clients of all sizes and in all sectors in the execution of their transformational objectives. As managing director of the workforce management practice at RSM US LLP, Chris helps clients and client-serving teams create an environment where business goals are well articulated, understood and achievable. He focuses on developing implementation strategies that accelerate time to value and include the approach, governance and rigor to effectively manage and mitigate risk and meet desired outcomes.

Chris is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and resides in Durham, New Hampshire.

Dr. Jessica Watrous is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and the Director of Clinical Research & Scientific Affairs at Modern Health. She received her PhD in Clinical Psychology with a focus on Health Psychology from the University of Memphis and completed an APA-accredited internship followed by an NIH-funded postdoctoral fellowship at University of California, San Diego/San Diego VA Healthcare System. Jessica has 15+ years of experience as both a psychological researcher and clinician working in a variety of settings with diverse populations. Her primary focus has been on the intersection between physical and mental health including the emotional impact of illness and injury, health behavior change, substance use problems, and treatment for co-occurring disorders. Jessica has published numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts and presented nationally and internationally on her work. She is passionate about mental healthcare innovation that leads to accessible, evidence-based, client- and culturally-centered care for all.
